Melville Turns 130

Community Invited to Help Shape a Historic Celebration

One of Johannesburg's oldest and most iconic suburbs marks 130 years this October, and it is calling on residents, artists, businesses and former Melvillians around the world to help build it.

One of Johannesburg's most iconic suburbs is preparing to celebrate a remarkable milestone. On October 5, 2026, Melville turns 130 years old, and a coalition of residents, businesses, artists, community organisations and local stakeholders has begun planning a celebration worthy of the suburb's rich history, creative spirit and unique character.

Representatives from the Melville Business Association, Melville Security Initiative, Melville Art Mile, Melville Koppies, Melville Residents' Association, the Melville Artisanal Market, local businesses and community groups recently met to begin shaping what is envisioned as a community-wide celebration running from 1 to 3 October 2026.

Planned activities currently include:

  • A special Melville Art Mile launch event

  • A special Saturday opening of the Melville Koppies, with a heritage hike

  • A pedestrianised 7th Street celebration

  • Art, music and cultural activations

  • Historical storytelling projects

  • Community exhibitions and experiences

Central to the celebration is a new initiative called My Melville Memories, inviting people from around the world who have lived, worked, studied, created, performed or simply spent time in Melville to share their stories, photographs and memories. A dedicated submission portal will open in the coming weeks.

"Melville has always been far more than a suburb. It is a place of stories, creativity, diversity, entrepreneurship and community. This milestone gives us the chance to celebrate the people who have shaped Melville over the past 130 years, and those who continue to shape its future."

— Darryl Gouws, Chairman, Melville Residents' Association

NOTES TO EDITORS: STORY ANGLES

  • A creative comeback. A 130-year-old suburb that has weathered hard years and, over the past two, mounted a genuine resurgence, from bohemian heartland back to creative hotspot (again).

  • Melville and the bigger Joburg story. The suburb is part of a wider push, alongside movements like Jozi My Jozi, WITS, UJ, residents’ associations, water campaigners and civic groups like JoburgCAN, to help make Johannesburg a world-class city again. The last nine months have been a hive of activity in Melville. Businesses are returning and residents are coming out — Melville’s role in Jozi’s Dream of Becoming A 24 Hour City.

  • Collaboration not seen since 1988. The Happening, the Melville Art Mile, JHF heritage walks, JoziWalks and Koppies events such as the 500-year old Batswana Tribe Smelter in AR together by UJ Metaverse Research Unit, Kuns op ’n Koppie and other hit events, and the water-conservation drives have built real momentum. Melville 130 brings every corner of the suburb together at a scale arguably not seen since the Mardi Gras.

  • A global call. My Melville Memories invites former and current residents, students, artists and visitors around the world to share their stories, photographs and memories, a ready-made human-interest thread for any outlet.
