Thank You, Melville: Reflecting on the MRA AGM 2026

The Melville Residents’ Association held its 2026 Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 2 September, bringing residents and community partners together for an evening of honest discussion, accountability and, importantly, renewed participation in our neighbourhood.

To every resident who attended, asked a question, shared a concern, offered an idea or simply came along to listen — thank you for showing up for Melville.

It was encouraging to see residents taking an active interest in what is happening in our suburb, particularly at a time when communities across Johannesburg are facing enormous pressure from failing infrastructure, unreliable basic services and increasingly difficult interactions with the structures responsible for delivering them.

A Year of Advocacy and Community Action

A central message throughout this year’s AGM was an important one: the MRA cannot replace the City of Johannesburg — nor should a residents’ association ever be expected to.

We are a volunteer organisation whose role is to advocate, engage, escalate, organise and hold the appropriate authorities accountable on behalf of our community.

Throughout the evening, members of the committee reported back on the work undertaken across the MRA’s portfolios during the past year.

Our Land Use Portfolio outlined the MRA’s involvement in several development and rezoning applications affecting Melville and surrounding neighbourhoods, as well as the continuing difficulty of obtaining meaningful City enforcement when suspected land-use and building contraventions are reported.

The Physical Environment Portfolio presented its work towards a cleaner, greener and better-maintained Melville, including initiatives addressing dumping and litter hotspots, waste, pavements, public spaces and environmental awareness, alongside partnerships with organisations such as CREASS and City entities.

Our Treasury report provided members with an overview of the MRA’s finances and commitment to transparent, accountable management of member contributions.

The Liquor Portfolio reflected on the difficult balance between supporting the vibrant hospitality sector that forms such an important part of Melville’s identity and protecting residents from excessive noise, public drinking, anti-social behaviour and establishments that fail to operate responsibly. The MRA and MBA’s multi-stakeholder Liquor Crisis Meeting in July was also discussed, together with the continuing challenge of inconsistent enforcement.

Our Legal Support Portfolio reported on the considerable work undertaken behind the scenes, including representation and advice relating to liquor matters, municipal services, the City’s proposed Commune Policy Review and broader civic issues affecting Melville.

Working Together for Melville

We were also pleased to welcome our community partners to the AGM.

The Melville Business Association (MBA) reflected on a positive year of activity and collaboration, including The Happening, the establishment of two running clubs, the Melville Art Mile, improved street security and cleanliness, new restaurants and daytime traders, and preparations around Melville’s 130th anniversary. The MBA also acknowledged the continuing challenge of noise and the importance of finding a sustainable balance between a thriving business district and the people who live here.

The Melville Security Initiative (MSI) provided residents with an update on community safety and the Safe Streets project, while Beagle Watch joined us as our guest speaker to discuss community engagement and security.

We thank all of these organisations and their representatives for participating in the evening and, more importantly, for the work they continue to do in Melville.

Thank You for Asking the Difficult Questions

One of the most important parts of an AGM is not simply presenting information — it is giving members the opportunity to engage with it.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Q&A session, raised concerns and contributed constructively to the discussion.

Residents should be able to ask questions of the organisations working within their community, understand how decisions are being made and expect transparency and accountability.

That kind of engagement ultimately makes all of our community structures stronger.

And a Special Thank You to Those Who Stepped Forward

Perhaps one of the most encouraging outcomes of the evening was seeing residents respond to our call for greater participation.

The MRA is powered entirely by residents who volunteer their time, skills and experience. We have been open throughout the year about the fact that the workload is significant and that a relatively small group of people has been carrying much of it.

So, to everyone who put their name forward and indicated that they would like to become involved with the MRA Committee: thank you.

Stepping forward matters.

We will be contacting everyone who expressed an interest and will arrange a meeting during the first week of October to introduce ourselves properly, discuss where your interests and skills may fit, and talk about how you could become involved in the work of the MRA.

There is no expectation that everyone needs to take on an enormous portfolio or commit every spare hour they have. Sometimes the most valuable contribution is simply bringing a particular skill, perspective or willingness to help when it is needed.

Melville Is Worth Showing Up For

The challenges facing our neighbourhood are real.

We cannot fix every broken pipe, repair every road, enforce every by-law or solve every problem confronting Johannesburg.

But we can organise.

We can advocate.

We can escalate.

We can collaborate.

We can hold those responsible accountable.

And, perhaps most importantly, we can continue looking out for one another rather than becoming resigned to the status quo.

That was the message with which we ended this year’s AGM: every resident who gets involved makes our collective voice stronger.

To our committee members who have volunteered countless hours over the past year, to our community partners, to everyone who participated in the AGM, and to every resident who has decided to step forward:
